A drum solo? Huh.

First solo I've had to review since I joined Newgrounds.

I think it's a decent attempt. You're keeping the tempo just fine from what I can tell. I just wish this were louder, more varied, and more technical. I took drum lessons for some time and I know that this is a fairly simple line. Play around with it more, loosen up, spice it up y'know?

Still, not bad.

Cimba responds:

IT's not a solo, it's for a drumline.

Good song.

Proper EDM structure? IN MY NEWGROUNDS? HOW DARE YOU?

That being said, I like the progression. Like the previous reviewer, my hopes weren't too high at first because of the simple intro. The structure's decent and you keep changing the song every now and then. However, you're repeating the same melody for over 2 minutes, could have played around more with that.

I was a little disappointed by the ending. I was sort of expecting a climax with a new melody after the airy break to be honest.

Still, nice melodies, good synths used, including those saws. While the beats are decent, I wasn't a big fan on your hats and snares, but the kick was great. They lacked some power to me.

All in all, a well-rounded song. GL in the NGADM.

dj-Jo responds:

Thanks for the luck lol

And I was kinda debating about how the end of the song, but I decided to just end it "ambiently" lol

Pretty interesting.

I love the melodies (specially the main one) and the progression, along with the upbeat tempo the song has. Pretty good drum beats.

I have one question... Are those real guitars? At times it sounds like they're real, other times, they sound like synth guitars, mainly because of the mechanical way in which the notes are played and the lack of dynamics for the most parts.

Clear that up for me ;)

Great song, keep it up.

Sawdust responds:

Well I do play guitar actually, so I write the melodies down on a real guitar, but since I don't have a nice stereo cable that I can plug into my pc and record properly, I use a samplebased guitar vst, and write the notes I wrote on my guitar on the pc. So yeah, I am using a synth guitar. The lack of dynamics and stuff is because of that.

Thanks.

Hm...

Well...you're probably just starting out with your music program.

I suggest adding percussion to the song, adding interesting melodies, and better synths.

There's not much to your track, so I can't really criticize much other than the fact that it's missing substance.

You'll get better with practice, take care :)

onewheeleddj responds:

thanks. i am just getting used to fruity loops. i have only had it for 2 weeks. i will try to make it better

Wow.

This is beautiful :D

I really like how you used the different pads here to create the atmosphere of the track. Really simple but effective melody too. It fits the title great.

Nice job. I tried doing my own bottom-of-the-sea-esque song sometime ago, but this is a lot nicer. Keep it up~

SatoDraygonFist2 responds:

It started more Irish and bagpipey, to be honest. Then I decided the melody was to sparse and didn't really fit the pads .. and then it turned into water. The evolution of song!

Rawr.

I accidentally closed the window and killed my review ):

Well, I'll get straight to the point instead :D Even though I'm using my cheap earbuds instead of my good headphones, the song sounds gorgeous. I really like what you did with the song. I had never heard the original until now and let me tell you, I like this version -a lot- better.

Really nice samples you're using here. The sounds in the different frequencies blend seamlessly. I'm jealous, I want your perc sounds haha.

I feel like this evokes more emotion that the original, and that's a great thing. My only problem is how short this song is. If you could expand on this someday, PM me cause I'd love to hear it.

Keep it up. I assume you did it from scratch rather than having the original midi?

SatoDraygonFist2 responds:

From scratch, verily. I used to just sit and play the original song, like, all day and then it occurred to me I ought to make a revamp of it. Then this weekend I happened to bring home the school's MIDI keyboard .. next thing I know, I've locked myself in my room and I'm looking through synth textures and leads and whatnot. Ta-da.

The beauty of Heartbeats is the simplicity. I didn't want to over-process it. Could lose some of its pow-ah. That's why I treaded a bit carefully - but from what you said, it sounds like I did an okay job.

And yes - I have become a fan of Garageband and its drum samples.

In other news: REALLY LONG ELABORATE REPLIES TO REVIEWS ARE TRENDY.

Hm..

I absolutely loved the intro.

Expect someone to draw comparisons to the Titanic Theme somewhere down the road though :P

I'm not a fan of the War part, but the song is an excellent expression of the feelings involved and the transition from love to war was good.

Bosa responds:

The notes a bagpipe plays is very limited, so I didn't have many choices on a pretty melody with pipes. I actually didn't take inspiration from Titanic.. I heard Amazing Grace being played by bagpipes once and it made me want to do something with a Celtic style. I've just now gotten around to it.

I'm glad you liked it, and I'll be making more tracks in the future.

Excellent song.

I really can't give you crit on this since there's absolutely nothing wrong with it to me. This is truly a masterpiece and the time you spent on it is more than evident. Your patience is worthy of admiration, I don't think I'd be able to work on a song for this long. This song would fit the Wind Waker game just fine, it's -that good-.

Great work. Added you to my favorite artists.

ChaotixMachine responds:

Thanks for the comment! :)

Just like how some people can spend close to a year creating a flash movie, it's probably the same for people who love music when they create a song. You love doing it, and that's why you're doing it. :P People do naturally tend to stay focused on things they love doing.

~Chaot!x

Very laid back.

I love the mellow sound of this track. Your samples are really good, wish I had some like those.

I can't really give you any crit since there's not much that's wrong with this. The lower end of the guitar's sound doesn't sound good though.

I have a question. How exactly do you setup your guitar/computer connection? I know you listed it on your description, but could you elaborate on that please? I just use plug in my guitar to my amp, my amp to my Lexicon box, and the box to the computer with a USB. I don't use an amp simulator.

sorohanro responds:

Well, the good news is that you can have everything for free ;)
Percussion is made with Yellow Tools Independence Free, drums with Addictive Drums demo (only kick, snare, hi-hats and one crash) and for toms there is Kontakt Player Free. Bass with UVI Workstatio which is also free.

My guitar setup is much cheaper than yours, I have a fairly cheap preamp and from that I go directly in my soundcard. From there I put in my DAW all the rest of stuff (effects, amp, cabinet simulator).

Holy shit.

Your voice is GORGEOUS. It's very Dido-ish and soft.

I wanna collab with you sometime. Your voice is just...inspiring.

Good track arrangement too.

kiwiaddict responds:

lol dido, really? second person who said that to me today...haha
sure i'm always up for collabs =)
thanks for listening!
